
Ralph Northam
State Senate District 6

Dr. Ralph Northam, a third generation native of Nassawaddox on the Eastern Shore, is our candidate for the Sixth Senate District. Ralph enrolled at the Virginia Military Institute where he graduated with distinction and was President of the Honor Court. Following undergrad, Ralph attended Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk.
After receiving his MD Ralph joined the United State Army, rising to the rank of Major. Ralph served in Landstul, Germany during the First Gulf War where he treated soldiers returning from Iraq. Ralph was honorably discharged from the Army in 1992. Dr. Northam then went on to complete residencies at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore followed by a fellowship at Walter Reed in Washington DC. After completing these programs, Ralph returned to Norfolk in 1992 and has worked at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) ever since.
Ralph has juggled the demands of an active practice, serving on the Board of Directors for the Edmarc Hospice for Children, serving on the Pharmacy and Mortality/Morbidity Committees at CHKD, and being a Assistant Professor of Neurology at EVMS. In 2006 Dr. Northam was honored with the Jefferson Award for Community Service Local and State in Washington DC for his work with the hospice. He also recieved the Hayes Teaching Award from CHKD, and the Faculty Teaching Award from EVMS for the past two years.
Reducing traffic, increasing access to healthcare, fighting crime, protecting the Bay, improving schools for both students and teachers, and fiscal discipline are Ralph's goals for the Sixth. His wife of 20 years Pam is an elementary school teacher in Virginia Beach and they have two children - Wes, 18, at William and Mary, and Aubrey, 16, at Cape Henry Collegiate.
Ralph feels that the Bay is so influential to the way of life for citizens of the Sixth District that he has chosen the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab to be his logo.
