"Our Democratic Party of Virginia family was saddened to learn of the passing of former Speaker of the House, Thomas Warren “Tom” Moss, Jr. His love for Virginia and the Democratic Party made our Commonwealth a better place to live and raise a family. He helped change the face of Virginia by challenging the Byrd machine as a young Democrat and winning his first election to the House of Delegates on the slogan 'Get Norfolk out of the Byrd Cage.'

"He was instrumental in building the modern Democratic Party when as Speaker, he and his leadership team established the first-in-the-nation Democratic State Caucus Program. This program was modeled nationally by both political parties, and is today considered the norm across the country.

"His love of politics and respect for the process made politics fun and all those who had a chance to learn from him are better today for it. On behalf of all Virginia Democrats, we will miss him, his sense of humor, and his incredible leadership for our Commonwealth."
