Obama’s Virginia Campaign for Change Opens 20 Offices Across the Commonwealth

Offices to celebrate grand openings Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. - U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's Virginia campaign announced today the opening of 20 Obama Campaign for Change offices across the Commonwealth. The offices will celebrate their grand openings Saturday with open houses, followed by door-to-door canvassing.

The scope of the office openings is unprecedented in the history of Democratic presidential campaigns in Virginia, and while some of the offices will be in the usual spots - Richmond, Norfolk, Fairfax and Charlottesville -- there will also be Campaign for Change centers in Castlewood, Martinsville, Danville and Winchester.

The Campaign for Change is a project of the Virginia Democratic Party, led by top staffers who will work to harness the enthusiasm of Obama's grassroots-level supporters and organize them in communities across the Commonwealth - neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend and colleague to colleague - working for the benefit of Democratic candidates up and down the ticket.

Throughout the primary, Obama's campaign showed a strong commitment to intensive grassroots organizing, inspiring millions of Americans to get involved in the political process for the first time.

The campaign's efforts reflected Obama's own experience. He got into public service working with church-based community organizations in Chicago neighborhoods devastated by steel plant layoffs. There, he saw the power everyday people have when they're brought together around a sense of common purpose. He learned that real change happens not from the top down but from the bottom up.

The Campaign for Change offices will act as convenient hubs for Commonwealth communities, places where Virginians can go to learn about Barack and get involved.

"Whether it's Danville or Alexandria, Winchester or Richmond, the most effective way to educate voters about Barack is with information they hear from the mouth of someone they trust - a neighbor, friend or colleague," Obama Virginia Campaign Director Mitch Stewart said. "The new offices represent the frame upon which our neighbor-to-neighbor, grassroots campaign will be built."
