DPVA Fellowship

The Democratic Party of Virginia is seeking a highly qualified individual for a paid, part-time fellowship for a 12 week term. The ideal candidate will be a highly qualified undergraduate student, college graduate, graduate student, or law student with experience working in progressive politics. The fellow will be expected to work 20 hours a week and comply to a consistent work schedule. The fellowship will take place at the Democratic Party of Virginia’s downtown Richmond location. This fellowship is a great opportunity for those looking to establish themselves in Virginia politics and learn more about the functions of a state political party. The fellow will be compensated $15 an hour.

The fellow will be placed into a department at the DPVA. Information about the departments can be found below. While specific job requirements will vary across departments, fellows will be expected to show responsibility and initiative to manage projects within their department. The fellow will be managed by the intern coordinator and those in their department. 


  • Ideal candidate will have a desire to learn about the inner workings of a political campaign and a state political party. 
  • Candidate must be able to commit to a 20 hour a week consistent work schedule. 
  • Candidate must be located in the Richmond area. 
  • Undergraduate candidates must have junior or senior class standing. 
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communications skills. 

Department Descriptions: 


  • Compiling daily press clips & media mentions 
  • Drafting language for press releases and announcements 
  • Researching policy and current events 
  • Social media planning and design 

Ideal candidates for this department will have a strong writing background. 


  • Social media planning and design
  • Drafting emails for our email fundraising program
  • Drafting graphics for social media
  • Designing merchandise for our store

Ideal candidates for this department will have a strong background in graphic design. 


  • Assisting local committees and campaigns with data needs 
  • Providing prompt customer service to party leaders and candidates 
  • Using political sense to give advice to clients and suggest modifications to data requests 
  • Ensuring that all users are able to use the online voter file effectively 

Ideal candidates for this position will have a strong background using VAN. 


  • Assisting in the planning and execution of fundraising events 
  • Spearheading donor prospecting and research initiatives 
  • Maintaining our donor database, NGP VAN 
  • Helping with low dollar and grassroots fundraising outreach 
  • Processing campaign contributions 

Ideal candidates for this position will have strong communication skills, experience in political settings, and a deep understanding of Virginia politics. 


  • Preparing bank deposits and expense requests 
  • Maintaining data integrity 
  • Assisting Operations Director with vendor accounts 
  • Performing other duties as assigned 

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in Excel/Google Sheets and show great attention to detail. 


  • Preparing for Quarterly Steering and Central Meetings 
  • Maintaining Party contact lists 
  • Assisting with candidate trainings 
  • Responding to political inquiries on behalf of the DPVA

Ideal candidates for this position will have strong communication skills, experience in political settings, and a deep understanding of Virginia politics. 

Voter Protection

  • Assist in preparation for the March Primary Elections and the May General Elections
  • Assist with Voter Outreach and Volunteer Recruitment
  • Research Virginia election law and update materials
  • Answer voters’ questions through the Voter Hotline

Ideal candidates will have an interest in Election Law.
