Richmond, VA – This morning, the Democratic-controlled Education and Health Committee bipartisanly killed HB 212, which would have put more barriers and intimidations for people seeking an abortion.
During this session, Republicans have continued their attacks on abortion rights and tried to pass several bills to turn Virginia back decades. From a 20-week abortion ban to limiting a person’s access to get the necessary health services they need, Republican attempts have been thwarted at every turn by Senate Democrats and the Brick Wall Caucus.
“Nothing is more personal than an individual's own reproductive health care. The power of the government should never ever come between a person and their doctor,” said DPVA Chair Susan Swecker. “Virginia Democrats are deeply committed to protecting Virginians' access to health care, including reproductive health care – and ensuring that the Commonwealth will not be pushed back to the restrictions of the 1950s and 60s when it comes to these rights. I am proud of the work the Brick Wall Caucus have done this session to fight against the many unconstitutional efforts put forward by Republicans.”
