Between July 13-16, 2020, Democrats from around the country will meet in Milwaukee, WI, to select our nominee for President and Vice President of the United States. In addition, Democrats adopt our party platform and showcase to the world the strength and unity of our party. The Convention marks the official transition from primary to general election. Virginia will send 124 National Delegates and 8 Alternates to the Democratic National Convention.
Virginia has 25 Automatic Delegates. The other 99 Delegates and 8 Alternates are selected through a process that begins long before the National Convention with the March 3, 2020 primary. This primary will determine how delegates at the state and national level in Virginia are allocated to presidential Candidates. The next step in the process will be city and county caucuses, held on either April 18thor April 20th, will elect 2,000 state delegates to represent the city or county at Congressional District and State Conventions and select national delegates and vote on other party business.Virginia’s 11 Congressional Districts will elect 65 Delegates and 6 Alternates at Congressional District Conventions held on either May 2nd, 9th, or 14th. Each Congressional District will elect between four and seven national delegates. The additional Delegates will be elected at the State Convention in Richmond on June 20th, including 21 At-Large Delegates and 2 Alternates and 13 Pledged Unpledged Party Leader and Elected Officials.
As part of our Affirmative Action and Outreach Plan, to help Democrats around the Commonwealth understand the process and encourage participation, the Congressional District Committees and organizations across the Commonwealth will be holding trainings. We also have a speaker’s bureau of Democratic activists who understand Delegate Selection and can come to your event to run a quick training. To be connected to someone on the Speaker’s Bureau, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ve also prepared a variety of educational materials and resources to help understand the process. They are all linked below.
