The second quarter has ended on a devastating note for the country with 15 million fewer jobs than in February, while the president is in denial mode about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Benefits that Congress passed are set to run out soon, but Trump has refused to acknowledge the problem.
Meanwhile, our most vulnerable communities are still bearing the brunt of this economic collapse. Adults without a high school diploma and people of color are still seeing disproportionately high unemployment.
This “recovery” is tenuous at best as renewed layoffs caused by COVID-19 spikes across the country will have ripple effects in the economy.
“From the beginning of this pandemic, Donald Trump has failed to protect the health, lives, and livelihoods of Virginians. Instead of listening to his own advisors, Trump ignored the pandemic, allowed the virus to spread, and inflicted an unprecedented economic disaster on working families.
He promised that this crisis would simply go away on its own, yet four months into this pandemic, we’ve lost 15 million jobs and more than 125,000 have lost their lives. Virginians know that Trump's denials and dangerous behavior have only worsened and prolonged the problem. We’ll vote Donald Trump, and his empty words, out of office in November,” said DPVA Press Secretary Carson Brown.
