VIRGINIA – During an interview with Richmond’s 8News, when asked if she would protect marriage equality in the Commonwealth, Winsome Earle-Sears refused to support marriage equality. Sears was recently exposed for leaving a note on legislation protecting marriage equality that she’s “morally opposed” to the bill. 

“Winsome Earle-Sears knows that her extreme record of opposing marriage equality is out of step with Virginians and now she’s dodging questions about it. Sears owes Virginians clear answers about her moral opposition to marriage equality,” said DPVA Spokesperson Maggie Amjad.

The Facts on Sears’ Extreme Record on LGBTQ Rights: 

• Sears left a handwritten note on a bill protecting marriage equality that she is “morally opposed” to the legislation.

  • It’s highly unusual for a Lt. Governor to leave a note while signing a bill. 

• Sears said she supported same-sex civil unions but dodged questions about whether she would support a ban on same-sex marriage in Virginia.

• Sears has sidestepped questions about whether she would support banning gay marriage in Virginiain 2022. 

• Sears gave the 2025 Commencement Speech at Regent University, a Christian college that describes “homosexual conduct” as “indecent” and “Obscene.”
