Daily Progress: Democrats to launch 'Worst of Winsome' tour in Charlottesville
- Virginia Democrats are launching a "Worst of Winsome" tour in Charlottesville Friday, targeting the GOP candidate for governor for her “extreme agenda and record."
- If being behind in the polls and fundraising weren't bad enough for Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears' campaign for governor, a new "Worst of Winsome" tour launches this Friday and will be criss-crossing the commonwealth for days.
- The Virginia Democratic Party will be launching the tour Friday in Charlottesville. A coinciding website, www.worstofwinsome.com, has already gone live.
- Charlottesville will be for the first stop of the tour on Friday, and Democratic officials are expected to be in attendance at a press conference at 11 a.m. in front of City Hall alongside Virginians who intend to share their personal stories of reproductive rights and marriage equality — both of which party leaders say Earle-Sears will target if elected governor in November.
- In January, Democrats, who have a slim majority in the Senate, abstained from voting on the Right to Contraception Act to force a tie-breaking vote, highlighting Earle-Sears' opposition to the proposed legislation that would have made access to contraception a legal right free from restrictions for Virginians.
- A separate measure passed by state Senate Democrats in January and then the House of Delegates in February would have amended Virginia’s constitution, enshrining “reproductive freedom” in the commonwealth’s Bill of Rights.
- Earle-Sears was legally required to sign the bill but added a note of her own volition. “I am morally opposed to this bill; no protection for the child,” reads the note left above her signature.
- She left a similar note on a largely symbolic bill protecting same-sex marriage in Virginia, which the General Assembly passed and Youngkin signed.
- A second "Worst of Winsome" press conference is planned for Richmond next Wednesday, where speakers are expected to discuss Earle-Sears' record on Medicaid and public education.
