DPVA Chair Statement Celebrating Pride Month 2022

by Democratic Party of Virginia

Richmond, VA – Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman, Susan Swecker released the following statement on the start of LGBTQ+ Pride Month 2022.

“On behalf of the Democratic Party of Virginia, I want to wish everyone a happy Pride Month! This month we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and their invaluable contributions to our communities, we recognize the challenges they continue to face and we recommit to fighting for a more equitable Virginia where every person can thrive.

“It was 53 years ago when Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera led the courageous 1969 Stonewall Uprising – calling out discriminatory laws and practices against the LGBTQ+ community. We reflect on their brave work and the work of countless others who have given their lives for equality and the notion that every person is equal under the law.

“But there is still work to be done. Too recently we’ve seen some of our rights hanging on by a thread. Republicans continue to spearhead anti-LGBTQ+ policies here in Virginia and across the country – even targeting the youngest and most vulnerable members of our communities. We cannot take our rights for granted and will have to fight every day to ensure that no one can be discriminated against based on who you are or who you love.”
