DPVA Chair Statement on the Six Year Anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges

by Democratic Party of Virginia

Richmond, VA — Today, on the six year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic Obergefell v. Hodges ruling which made marriage equality the law of the land, Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker released the following statement:

“Six years ago today, the Supreme Court delivered a historic ruling that finally made marriage equality the law of the land in this country. This decision brought all Virginians and Americans the freedom to marry who they love -- and today, we are a better nation and a better commonwealth because of it. Today, we celebrate this momentous step forward in our country’s long march towards realizing our highest ideals of freedom and justice for all.

This anniversary is also a reminder that the fight for true equality is constant and ongoing. With extreme politicians like Glenn Youngkin seeking to drag us backwards, we must continue working together to build upon the important progress we have made here in Virginia. Today, and every day, Virginia Democrats remain committed to celebrating, protecting, and advancing LGBTQ rights.”
