DPVA Chair Statement on Virginia Democrats Win, Stopping GOP From Taking Total Control

by Democratic Party of Virginia

RICHMOND, VA – The results are in, Democrats will control the Virginia State Senate for the next four years, stopping Governor Youngkin, Virginia Republicans, and MAGA extremists’ plan to take total control of state government and enact their agenda.

Susan Swecker, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, released the following statement in response to the victory:

“Governor Youngkin and Virginia Republicans did everything they could to take total control of state government, but the people of the Commonwealth rejected them. Even with tens of millions spent and after every attempt to suppress the vote, there was no way for Republicans to sell Virginians on giving them control to take away our rights, our freedoms, and put the middle class at risk.  Virginians won’t go backwards. Instead of extremism and culture wars, people voted for common sense leadership and problem solvers.

I’d like to extend a big congratulations to all our Democratic candidates – the veterans, the teachers, the public servants, and more – they represent Virginians. And, special congratulations to the leadership in the Senate of Virginia who worked tirelessly to deliver this result.  None of this would have been possible without our Democratic Senators and members of the Congressional delegation who campaigned tirelessly across the Commonwealth for our victories.

Most importantly, thank you to the volunteers, the activists, and the voters who stood up and fought back against right-wing MAGA extremism. The blue brick wall in Virginia stands.

Voters across Virginia voted for leadership that will protect their abortion rights, keep guns out of the wrong hands, and lower costs for Virginia’s families. Thank you to all the voters who showed up at the polls and voted for our Democratic candidates.”
