DPVA Chairman Lamont Bagby’s Statement Ahead of the 60th Anniversary of Medicaid

DPVA Chairman Lamont Bagby shared the following statement ahead of tomorrow's 60th anniversary of Medicaid being signed into law:

"Sixty years ago, President Johnson signed Medicaid into law, a transformative step that changed the course of health care in America. Since then, millions of Virginians have gained access to affordable, life-saving health care that they otherwise would have gone without.

In 2018, I was proud to play a part in expanding Virginia's Medicaid program, which has since provided coverage to hundreds of thousands of hardworking Virginians. That expansion was a promise kept: that health care is not a privilege for the few, but a right for all.

But Donald Trump and Republicans don't believe in that right. They believe that 322,000 Virginians should lose health care to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. They believe children, families, and seniors should be left to fend for themselves when they get sick. And Winsome Earle-Sears, John Reid, and Jason Miyares support Trump's reckless agenda in gutting the very programs that keep Virginians healthy and their costs low.

We have fewer than 100 days until Election Day. Every single day, Virginia Democrats are ensuring that every single Virginian knows what's at stake: their health care, their rights, and their future. Abigail Spanberger, Ghazala Hashmi, Jay Jones, and our 100 nominees for the House of Delegates will protect our progress and move Virginia forward. So let this anniversary be a reminder that when we organize, and when we fight like hell, we win."
