RICHMOND, VA – Yesterday evening, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger introduced a bipartisan amendment designed to protect Virginia’s shoreline from oil and gas drilling.
With the significant military installments along Virginia’s coastline, drilling would pose a serious threat to national security and military readiness. Likewise, it would cause irreparable damage to the local economy, particularly the seafood industry.
Despite the amendment’s bipartisan support, every member of the Virginia GOP’s congressional delegation voted against the amendment, including Congressman Wittman and Congresswoman Kiggans, whose districts include portions of the Virginia coastline.
“This level of partisanship is unsurprising for Virginia’s GOP congressional delegation,” said Liam Watson, Press Secretary for the Democratic Party of Virginia. “For Congresspeople Kiggans and Wittman in particular, this amendment would have done a great deal to protect their constituents’ interests, the interests of the Commonwealth, and the national security aims of the United States.”
