NEW: Reproductive Rights Amendment Sears Opposes Raises the Stakes of 2025 Election

Winsome Earle-Sears, in her own words, is “morally opposed” to constitutional amendment protecting reproductive freedom

VIRGINIA – As new reporting revealed that Winsome Earle-Sears is “morally opposed” to the constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom, the Virginia Pilot editorial team highlighted the 2025 election is tied to the fate of the constitutional amendment.

“In her own words, Winsome Earle-Sears said she is ‘morally opposed’ to protecting reproductive freedom. Sears now must explain why she left the note and why she would enact an extreme agenda that’s out-of-step with Virginians,” said DPVA Spokesperson Maggie Amjad.

Virginia Pilot Editorial: Fall Election Will Help Determine the Fate of Constitutional Amendments

  • The first amendment, HJ1, is a direct response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which effectively overturned the court’s landmark 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade.
  • It asserts that “every individual has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom and that the right to make and effectuate one’s own decisions about all matters related to one’s pregnancy cannot be denied, burdened, or otherwise infringed.”
  • Virginia is one of only two states where neither the right to an abortion or restrictions to the procedure are enshrined in the state Constitution.
  • The proposed amendment would establish that right and ensure that reproductive access would not be a political football tossed back and forth in each legislative election.
  • While the language of these measures won’t appear on the ballot this fall, the issues are very much part of this year’s legislative campaign [...].
  • [...] these constitutional amendments further raise the stakes, and should be an important consideration for those who cast a ballot this fall.
