VIRGINIA – As threats to Medicaid funding put Virginians’ access to affordable healthcare at risk, Winsome Earle-Sears has stayed silent. Sears has repeatedly defended and cheered on policies that hurt Virginians.

“As Republicans in Congress threaten cuts to Medicaid putting thousands of Virginians’ access to health insurance at risk, Winsome Earle-Sears has stayed silent instead of speaking out against the cuts. Virginians deserve to know where Sears stands and she must answer them,” said DPVA Spokesperson Maggie Amjad.

13 News Now: What's at stake? Virginia state lawmakers briefed on potential impacts of federal Medicaid cuts

  • A bipartisan group of Virginia delegates were briefed Monday on the impact Medicaid cuts could have across the state and local communities. The meeting, the third for the Emergency Committee on the Impacts of Federal Workforce and Funding Reductions, was held one day after congress unveiled legislation that targeted $880 billion in cuts centered around Medicaid.
  • Currently, there are 1.9 million Virginians enrolled in Medicaid across its Base, FAMIS and Expansion program
  • There are more than 583,000 Virginians enrolled in Medicaid Expansion. 
  • Polling also showed a majority of Republican, Democrat and Independent voters believed Medicaid funding should either stay the same or be expanded upon.
  • A preliminary estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the proposals would reduce the number of people with health care by 8.6 million over the decade.
