Richmond, VA – After a conservative Supreme Court opinion signaled that same-sex marriage and contraceptives could be targeted, last week a majority of House Republicans — including all Virginia Republicans — voted against bills that would protect same-sex marriage, interracial marriage, and Virginians' ability to access birth control.
While all this happened, Jen Kiggans, a political opportunist and far-right extremist has remained silent in the face of these shocking votes. Virginians deserve to know: How would Jen Kiggans have voted on these bills in Congress?
Jen Kiggans has attempted to hide her extreme views from Coastal Virginians. But the truth is, Kiggans has spearheaded anti-LGBTQ policies in the Virginia Senate – attacking some of the most vulnerable and young members of the community and remaining silent when Virginia Republicans voted against removing the same-sex marriage ban from Virginia’s Constitution.
This falls in line with her outdated, out-of-touch platform. Kiggans has made ending access to safe, legal abortion a core motivation to run for office. Her long record of anti-abortion extremism is a danger to women across the Commonwealth. She’s voted for a vile anti-abortion amendment aimed to restrict crucial funds for reproductive health care that will disproportionately impact low-income Virginians, promoted false claims about “infanticide,” and consistently voted against legislation to expand access to reproductive health care.
“Jen Kiggans is in hiding. She refuses to state where she stands on gay and interracial marriage – and Coastal Virginians deserve to know,” said DPVA Spokesperson Gianni Snidle. “This isn’t the 1950s, it's 2022. Jen Kiggans will turn back the clock to a time when women were second-class citizens and it was illegal to marry the person you love. Her silence on same-sex and interracial marriage is unacceptable. The people of Coastal Virginia deserve a representative in Congress like Elaine Luria who is not afraid to take a stand for what’s right and fight for the rights of all Americans, including the right to choose and the right to marry who they love.”
