Vega Is Hiding Her Extreme Positions on Abortion Bans in Cases of Rape, Incest, or Life-Threatening Pregnancies

by Democratic Party of Virginia

Richmond, VA – Yesli Vega knows her positions on reproductive rights are way out of step with Virginians — she’s hiding her extreme positions from reporters and the voters of Virginia’s 7th District. The question of whether she would oppose exceptions to abortion bans in the case of rape, incest, or danger to the life of the mother remains unanswered.

As the Prince William Times reports, Vega refused to answer questions about whether she believes there should be exceptions in an abortion ban for rape, incest, and life-threatening pregnancies:

“GOP nominee for Congress declines to say whether abortion bans should include exceptions for rape, incest or life-threatening pregnancies”

This comes after Yesli Vega was caught channeling her inner Todd Akin and pushed the false claim that victims of rape are less likely to get pregnant.

Vega has positioned herself as one of the most extreme candidates in the country running for Congress and has taken a radical anti-abortion stance. Vega’s hardline agenda to outlaw safe, legal abortion comes as no surprise:

  • Vega downplayed the possibility of someone getting pregnant through rape saying, “it's not something that's happening organically. You're forcing it. The individual, the male, is doing it as quickly.”
  • She has made banning abortion in the Commonwealth a central issue of her campaign.
  • Vega praised the leaked draft opinion by the Court as “an amazing victory.”

“Everyone should be asking Yesli Vega if she wants to ban abortion in cases rape, incest, and life-threatening pregnancies,” said DPVA Spokesperson Gianni Snidle. “Yesli Vega has already positioned herself as out of touch and too extreme for Virginians. Her radical comments and views are a danger to women across the Commonwealth. The contrast could not be more clear between Yesli Vega and Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, who is a staunch defender of a woman’s right to choose and the fundamental right to privacy.”
