WINSOME, LOSE SOME: Sears Slammed for Extreme Record Supporting Abortion Bans

by DPVA Press

VIRGINIA – It’s been another week of challenges for Winsome Earle-Sears from a new ad highlighting her out of touch record supporting abortion bans to her prolonged silence on the attacks on Medicaid, Virginians know Sears is too extreme for Virginia.

Even a visit from Sarah Huckabee Sanders — who like Sears has an extreme record opposing abortion and reproductive rights — can’t save this week for Sears.

SETTLING THIS WEEK’S SCORE

Winsome’s Wins:

  • Back on the Big Screen: This week, the Democratic Party of Virginia launched a new digital ad highlighting Winsome Earle-Sears’ extreme record supporting abortion bans and restricting access to birth control.
  • Sears Stumps with Sarah Huckabee Sanders: Sears attended an event in Upperville, Virginia alongside Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who like Sears has an extreme record opposing abortion and reproductive rights, and has stated that she does not support adding exceptions for victims of rape and incest to the Arkansas abortion ban. Huckabee Sanders also pledged to sign even further restrictions into law.

Winsome’s Losses:

  • Unearthed Audio: New reporting from The Guardian reveals new audio of  Winsome Earle-Sears doubling down on her extreme support of abortion bans despite her recent lies that she’s “never said limiting access” and “we’re not limiting access at all.” The Guardian unearthed Sears saying “we need to make our choices before we’re pregnant, not, you know, after, you already made a choice,” calling abortion “genocide,” and supporting a near total abortion ban.
  • Sears Stays Silent: Ahead of the anniversary of Medicaid expansion in Virginia, elected leaders called out Winsome Earle-Sears for her silence following Republicans voting for cuts to Medicaid as part of Donald Trump's agenda. Sears has declined to comment on the proposed cuts which would result in more than 200,000 Virginians losing their insurance.
  • Comparing Notes: Sears handwritten notes that she is “morally opposed” to protecting reproductive rights and marriage equality in Virginia are still in the spotlight this week after she doubled down on her opposition to marriage equality and outright lied about her support for a dangerous abortion ban.

And with Winsome, it’s Virginians who stand to lose the most:

  • With Winsome Earle-Sears focused on an extreme agenda backing ongoing attacks on Virginia jobs and workers, defunding public schools, and ripping away reproductive rights, Virginians stand to lose the most.
