Two mass shootings in a row in our country and Youngkin still refuses to talk about guns
Richmond, VA – After the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde where an 18-year-old armed with an AR-15 and handgun killed 19 children and two adults, Governor Youngkin once again failed to address the underlying issue of this and other tragedies – guns.
Yesterday, in the wake of the shooting, Governor Youngkin offered an empty political statement as a solution to the ongoing school shooting crisis, proposing more resource officers in schools. This is after it was shown that the resource officers failed to stop the shooter in both the Robb Elementary school and in the 2018 Parkland High school shooting. Missing from his statement and his political gesture was any acknowledgment of the root cause of these tragedies – guns.
This is nothing new. When Governor Youngkin announced the creation of a Violent Crime Task Force, he side-stepped and refused to answer any questions about why his task force isn’t addressing the number one cause of violent crimes – guns.
Then after a white supremacist terrorist used an AR-15 in a Buffalo, New York grocery store killing 10 people, the Governor’s statement conveniently left out any mention of white supremacy or the cause of the tragedy – guns.
See a pattern?
“Time and time again, shooting after shooting, Governor Youngkin refuses to talk about guns,” said DPVA Spokesperson Gianni Snidle. “Rather than find real solutions to these senseless tragedies and keep our communities, schools, and Commonwealth safe, the Governor would rather play politics and keep the gun industry happy. Enough is enough, too many innocent children, mothers, fathers, and friends have died. We need real solutions to the gun crisis, not empty political statements.”
