Day 32: A Month After Charlottesville, Ed Gillespie Has Still Refused to Speak Out Against President Trump’s Vile Defense of White Supremacy

Instead of Standing Up to Donald Trump’s Ugly Rhetoric, Ed Gillespie Has Adopted It

One month ago, white supremacists, Nazis and the KKK brought their hate to Charlottesville. In a disturbing display of bigotry and racism, the marchers demonstrated through the streets proclaiming their hateful ideology, yelling anti-Semitic chants — and waging deadly violence. During that tragic and terrible day, Heather Heyer — an American hero who had the courage to stand up to hate and racism — lost her life.

In the wake of the terrorist attack, President Trump horrified the entire country by not once, but twice, defending the white supremacists who killed Heyer and injured at least 19 people. In the aftermath of Trump’s vile comments, Republican leaders like Sens. Tim Scott and Cory Gardner quickly condemned Donald Trump’s comments. Yet Ed Gillespie has refused to speak out against the President’s vile defense of white supremacists. Instead of standing up to Trump, Gillespie has hired former Trump campaign staffersmimicked the President’s attacks on the media, and adopted divisive, Trumpian rhetoric. Just last week, Gillespie once again bragged about his close relationship with senior officials in the Trump administration.

“For a month, Ed Gillespie has refused to denounce Donald Trump’s hateful defense of the Nazi terrorists who attacked Virginia,” said DPVA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “By refusing to stand up to the President, Ed Gillespie has forfeited his integrity — and shamefully betrayed the legacy of the Party of Lincoln. If Ed Gillespie can’t stand up to Donald Trump, how can voters expect him to stand up for Virginia?”
