At an “InformED Decision” event today in Salem, Ed Gillespie claimed that there are no sanctuary cities in Virginia — an admission that directly contradicts the central claim of his latest television ad.
While answering a question about the threat of MS-13, Gillespie said that "we don’t have any cities or counties that have declared themselves sanctuary cities.”
That statement directly undercuts Gillespie’s newest TV spot (and much of his paid media), which claims that Ralph Northam cast the deciding vote in favor of sanctuary cities “that let illegal immigrants who commit crimes back on the street, increasing the threat of MS-13.” That advertisement has been called “misleading” by the nonpartisan FactCheck.org — an assessment that Ed Gillespie today appeared to agree with today.
“Today Ed Gillespie admitted that his divisive, disgusting TV ads are based on a lie,” saidDPVA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “By knowingly airing false ads, Ed Gillespie is blatantly misleading the people of Virginia and proving that he will say or do anything to win power. Virginians deserve better than Ed Gillespie’s cynical, divisive lies.”
