NORFOLK, Va. — At a press conference today, Delegate Daun Hester and City Council Member Andria McClellan will speak out against Ed Gillespie’s attacks on a bipartisan transportation deal that has secured critical funding to widen 22 miles of I-64 on the Peninsula, construct a new high-rise bridge, and fix the I-64/I-264 interchange. Hester and McClellan will call out Gillespie for playing politics with Virginia’s future instead of laying out real solutions that will improve the Commonwealth’s transportation system and economy.
For months, Gillespie has repeatedly criticized Ralph Northam for supporting Governor McDonnell’s 2013 bipartisan transportation breakthrough that provided desperately needed investments in Virginia’s transportation system. Despite chairing McDonnell's 2009 gubernatorial campaign and touting McDonnell's endorsement of his own candidacy, Gillespie has turned his back on this major accomplishment and cynically used it as an attack against Northam. Fellow Republicans have slammed Gillespie’s attacks on the transportation deal, with former State Senator John Watkins even calling Gillespie “a political opportunist” for attacking the bill.
