DPVA Chair Statement On Chauvin Trial Verdict

by Democratic Party of Virginia

Richmond, VA — Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker released the following statement on the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd:

"While this verdict offers some justice, it does not make up for the pain that George Floyd's family and countless communities have endured both before and after his murder. The footage of Lieutenant Nazario's abuse, the murder of Daunte Wright, and other recent examples of a broken justice system are reminders that our work is far from over and that we must continue to push for change.

In the months since George Floyd's murder, Virginians have been protesting, organizing, and advocating for racial justice like never before. That work has led to tangible results in our commonwealth, and Virginia is taking real steps towards equality. This verdict, while just, will not bring George Floyd back. The verdict today is a continual reminder that the fight for justice must continue. Our thoughts are with George Floyd's family and loved ones during this sensitive time and with the families of many others who have yet to see justice."
