Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) Chairwoman Susan Swecker released the following statement on Governor McAuliffe's restoration of rights announcement:

"I commend Governor McAuliffe for his unwavering commitment to expanding the right to vote for Virginians who have served their time and re-entered their communities. In the face of Republican opposition, Governor McAuliffe has remained steadfast in his effort to move Virginia forward and continue the fight to eliminate Civil War-era barriers to the polls within the parameters set forth by the Supreme Court of Virginia.

"Virginia Republicans should immediately cease their shameful attempts to undermine the right to vote, and they should join the right side of history and help pass a Constitutional amendment to repeal felony disenfranchisement once and for all. It's time for a new chapter. It's time for Republicans to go out and earn the votes of those who have served their time instead of fear-mongering, blaming the media, and demonizing those who have served their time and re-entered their communities.

"You either believe in second chances or you don't: now is the time for Republicans to show Virginians where they truly stand."
