DPVA Statement on Strong May Jobs Report

by Democratic Party of Virginia

New data shows the U.S. unemployment rate is the lowest since before the pandemic

Richmond, VA — Today, in response to news that the U.S. economy added 559,000 jobs in May and new data showing COVID-19 infections declining to the lowest point since the start of the pandemic, DPVA released the following statement from Chairwoman Susan Swecker:

“Today’s jobs report is further evidence that under Democratic leadership, the U.S. is recovering strongly from the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Despite steadfast Republican opposition, President Biden and Democrats in Congress have delivered critical economic relief and are leading the way on vaccinations — the key to our recovery. In the first four months of the Biden administration, more than 2 million jobs were created across the country.

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, millions of Virginians have gotten critical relief — helping to put food on the table, pay bills, keep small businesses afloat, and build a stronger post-COVID economy. It is clear that President Biden’s leadership is working, and Virginia Democrats will continue working hard to ensure that we keep building a better future for communities across the commonwealth.”
