Gov. Northam orders flags at half-staff in memory of McCain
Gov. Ralph Northam has ordered the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia to be flown at half-staff through Sunday evening in memory of Sen. John McCain.
The governor's order on Monday came hours after the White House raised its U.S. flag to full staff. Standard procedure of flying a flag half-staff when a member of the Senate dies is to fly it that way the day of the death and the following day.
McCain died on Saturday at 81 after battling brain cancer.
There will be several services this week to remember McCain.
"John McCain was a hero, my chairman, and my friend," said U.S. Sen Tim Kaine of Virginia. "After six decades of public service, he will be remembered as a maverick, a model of strength in Vietnam, and a champion of servicemembers, campaign finance reform, and innumerable other causes."
