Hot Springs, Va. — Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman Susan Swecker released the following statement on Ralph Northam’s resounding victory at today’s gubernatorial debate:
“Ed Gillespie just lost today’s debate because he repeatedly refused to stand up to Donald Trump on healthcare, on women’s health, and tax cuts for the rich. Ed acted more like a man auditioning to be Trump’s chief lobbyist in Richmond than the next leader of our commonwealth.
“After today, voters are left wondering: if Ed Gillespie can’t stand up to Donald Trump, how can we expect him to stand up for Virginia? Over the course of ninety minutes, Ed failed to lay out any serious solutions to help Virginians across our commonwealth — especially those who feel left behind. On the critical issues facing Virginians — from the opioid crisis to growing our rural economy — Gillespie offered nothing more than stale talking points and lobbyist double-speak.
“In stark contrast, Ralph Northam put forward concrete solutions that will expand Virginians’ access to quality, affordable health care, protect Medicaid, expand economic opportunity, and uphold our tradition of fiscal responsibility. Ralph was compassionate, optimistic and convincing — and was the only candidate onstage who stood up for better jobs, better schools, and better healthcare for all Virginians.”
