Three Years After Failed ACA Repeal Vote, Donald Trump Continues Attacks on Virginians’ Health Care

by Democratic Party of Virginia

Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker released the following statement on the third anniversary of Donald Trump and Republicans’ failed attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act:

"On the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised Virginians that we would ‘pay much less’ for a ‘great health care program.’ But from his first days in office, he has instead waged a ruthless campaign to overturn the Affordable Care Act, threatening coverage for hundreds of thousands of Viginians and protections for millions more with preexisting conditions.

"Even in the midst of his disastrous pandemic response, Trump is still waging this twisted attack on Virginians’ health care. We deserve better than four more years of his broken promises. We need a president who will fight every day for the health, safety, and wellbeing of our commonwealth — we need Joe Biden in the White House.”

BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S BROKEN PROMISES TO VIRGINIANS

Promise: “We're going to have that great health care program. But we're going to take care of everyone, we're going to take care of people. And people are going to pay much less and get it so good.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Richmond VA, 10/14/15]

Reality: If Republicans successfully overturn the Affordable Care Act, 642,000 Virginians could lose their health coverage, nearly doubling the state’s number of uninsured residents. Without the ACA’s protections, as many as 3.4 million Virginians with preexisting conditions could have been denied coverage or charged higher rates.
