VIRGINIA – It’s been another challenging week for Winsome Earle-Sears as the GOP Governor’s primary accelerates and her opponents strike. Sears can’t escape accountability - even as she escapes answering any questions from the media about why she’s defending Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs and the state of her flailing campaign. Sears’ record is catching up to her, from her campaign struggles to competing for Donald Trump’s attention to hiding from a billboard.
SETTLING THIS WEEK’S SCORE
Winsome’s Wins:
- Trumped: A new story from the Washington Post detailed how Sears is “fully embracing” Donald Trump despite his ongoing attacks on Virginia’s workforce and economy, as well as how Sears, LaRock, and Chase are “elbowing one another to strike the most pro-Trump pose.” Sears staff even described her as “more conservative than Donald Trump” in leaked audio from a private event.
- Flailing, Failing, Yet Filing Signatures: Sears made it on to the ballot, although coverage of the accomplishment focused on “struggles” her campaign is having and on the hurdles Sears still faces to secure the nomination like the “crowded” GOP primary with Dave LaRock and Amanda Chase, and the many Republicans across Virginia who don’t think they can win with Winsome.
Winsome’s Losses:
- Where’s Winsome?: Instead of turning in her signatures with fellow candidates on Monday, Sears sent a staffer to do it, perhaps in an attempt to avoid the mobile billboard truck circling the block reminding her and Virginians of the messy GOP primary she’s running in.
- Tit for Tat: During an interview with Fox 5, LaRock said he “came to the conclusion with many other people” that Sears is “unelectable,” reminding Sears of her few fans. It was fair game for LaRock to go after Sears, as earlier in the week she called him “a person of no character,” but electability tends to be more important in politics.
And with Winsome, it’s Virginians who stand to lose the most:
- With a GOP primary field focused on causing chaos, proving their loyalty to Trump, and fighting with each other instead of fighting for the Commonwealth, Virginians will lose the most.
- No matter how much the GOP field fights, they all agree on the same radical agenda backing ongoing attacks on Virginia jobs and workers, defunding public schools, and ripping away reproductive rights.
